historical marker showing the site of a block house built in 1835 by the Texas RangersThe area is rich in history, first inhabited by Native Americans, and later serving as the site of Blockhouse Fort, built in 1838 by the Republic of Texas. The namesake fort was built around a spring and lookout tree, and it was manned by Texas Rangers. The Rangers monitored the horizon for raiders to protect the early settlers, who would bring their families, livestock, and belongings into the fort for protection. The fort didn’t last long, however, as it was burned down in 1839 by the Native Americans and was never rebuilt.

Later in the 1800s, the land was owned by the Walker family, and their historic home has been beautifully restored by the Block House Municipal Utility District (MUD) and is used to host meetings and small gatherings for residents.
